Organic Wines

There are three categories of wine producer committed to sustainable development.

Semi-organic Agriculture: Manifesting itself in the 1990's by the voluntary new methods employed by certain wine producers, incurring no controls or inspections. The vines are chemically treated only when absolutely necessary and only with treatments the least harmful to the environment. The label representing this category is "Terra Vitis"

Organic Agriculture: Incarnates the total rejection of all chemical treatments. In order to obtain this label the producers are subjected to regular and strict controls. It takes three years to convert land ready for organic agriculture. The vines are treated with natural products, encouraging the plants to build up their own defences, though the ‘bouillie bordelaise’ containing sulphur and copper, is tolerated. The label representing this category is "Ecocert".

Biodynamie: Based on the works of Rudolph Steiner who represents the earth as a living organism on which agriculture must be at one with the products of the land and, therefore, help vegetation to flourish. Within the domain of viticulture, it is Nicolas Joly with the ‘Coulée de Serrant’ who is the forerunner. Today, the wine growers concerned, treat their vines with natural preparations by homeopathic dose. As with classic organic agriculture, the ‘bouillie bordelaise’ is accepted for use against mildew. The label valorising this category is "Demeter".
